Patient Professional & Community Education 
 
 

The Los Angeles Oncologic Institute (LAOI) also offers extensive educational services for patients, the community, oncology staff and other medical professionals.

Patient Education

Mark Wyland Patient/Family Resource Library: Established for patients and family members to access information about cancer, conventional and investigational treatments, support services, pain management, bereavement and other cancer-related information. The library is located in the Cancer Treatment Center and includes videos and print publications.

Patient Questionnaires, Quality of Life Inquiry: All patients are asked to fill out questionnaires relating to their satisfaction with available hospital services and to provide information over time relating to their perspectives on their quality of life. The data is reviewed regularly to optimize patient care.

Language Translation Support: Office personnel are available to provide patient assistance in a variety of languages, including Spanish, Tagalog, Armenian and Korean.

Patient-Family Conferences: Regular meetings are held with doctors and their patients and families to ensure that the best possible care has been achieved.

CancerHelpTM Computer: CancerHelpTM is an easy-to-use, touch-screen cancer-patient education database of current information on all aspects of living with cancer. It is a tool to help patients fight their cancer.


Professional Education
The Los Angeles Oncologic Institute also conducts continuing education.
An annual Oncology Nursing Symposium: A continuing education program designed for oncology nurses and other health care professionals interested in current trends and issues related to oncology patient care. The symposium has educated nurses and other professionals since 1989.

Medical Grand Rounds Oncology Conference: A quarterly physician conference dedicated to current oncology topics. Physicians attending receive CME credit.
Community Education
Breast Cancer Awareness Day: Held annually in October, this campaign provides breast cancer awareness information to patients and staff.
