US World and News Report Ranks St. Vincent Medical Center One of the Top 10 Hospitals in Greater Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – March 30, 2011 – Out of 138 total hospitals, US News and World Report ranked St. Vincent Medical Center as one of the 10 Best Hospitals in the Greater Los Angeles Area. The report recognized St. Vincent Medical Center for providing high quality care in areas such as cancer, ear, nose and throat, geriatrics, kidney disorders, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, pulmonology and urology.

Additionally, St. Vincent Medical Center is a perennial award-winning hospital in the area of quality, having received recognition by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for three consecutive years, including Outstanding Clinical Quality, Patient Safety, and Emergency Medicine.

“Being recognized for providing quality care doesn’t happen by chance. Our surgeons, clinical staff and entire patient care team represent a dedicated group serving the local community,” said Cathy Fickes, president and CEO of St. Vincent Medical Center. “This special independent acknowledgment encourages our hospital to continuously strive for perfect care.”

US News and World Report surveyed 4,852 U.S. hospitals, which were broken down into much smaller groups by specialty—898 in cancer and 1,598 in orthopaedics, for instance—that met stringent benchmarks such as a minimum number of certain types of serious cases. The top 25 percent of hospitals in each specialty that met those standards were identified, using the scoring methods employed in the national rankings. Out of those 25 percent, hospitals within metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more were ranked in their metro area.
